Victim was 86-years old

Authorities in Jackson County said an 86-year old junkyard owner found dead in his home on March 1 was murdered. Charles Mason was discovered in his home on Astor Street in the Helena community late Monday night. County officials said Mason had been in the junkyard business his entire life, but in recent years had problems with people building meth labs on the property.

Sheriff Mike Byrd said Mason was never arrested on drug charges, but an investigation will determine if Mason’s death was drug related.

Two people are being questioned in the case.

Man indicted for growing marijuana

A special grand jury has indicted a Tupelo man charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and manufacture. Corry A. Shelton, 32, of the 1400 block of Sims Gin Road was arrested in November 2010 and charged with growing marijuana plants in Pontotoc County.

Authorities are still investigating.

Jackson foundation gets $300,000 in funding

United States Representative Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) announced The Corporation for National and Community Service has awarded $300,000 to the Foundation of the Mid-South in Jackson as part of the inaugural 2010 grant-selection process for the Social Innovation Fund (SIF).

The Foundation of the Mid-South, the Delta Workforce Funding Collaborative (DWFC) serves the rural, 14-county region along the northwestern Mississippi Delta. DWFC will offer a variety of job seeker services including career navigation and specialized job training, in addition to aiding employers through skill needs assessments and job seeker screening.

DWFC projects that it will serve 500 job seekers and will enroll 275 in training and education programs. Of these, 215 will receive industry-recognized credentials and 238 will obtain jobs.

Lee County man indicted for child pornography

A 20-year old Lee County man has been indicted by a federal grand jury after authorities seized computers and electronic equipment containing images of child pornography. Graham Seth Brown made an initial apperance in court last week to hear the charges against him.

Brown was arrested in Tupelo in February 2011.
