Cadaver truck overturns in McComb with 18 bodies inside

News Briefs From Across The State

Driver in critical condition

Authorities said a truck driver is in serious condition after his rig hit a ditch, went airborne and overturned with 18 cadavers inside. The Enterprise-Journal said Phillip R. Plummer was transferred to intensive care at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center on Aug. 10, after an accident earlier that day.

Plummer was traveling in the southbound lane of I-55 about 8:30 a.m., on Aug. 10, when his rig left the roadway near the Liberty exit. Plummer was driving a Preferred Equipment Leasing truck under lease from the Minneapolis-based medical technology company, Medtronic, when it went airborne and crashed.

The Enterprise-Journal quoted McComb police Sgt. Mike Roberts as saying the accident did not cause any hazardous materials or cadavers to spill out. However, the main concern was that the cadavers were not embalmed and the wreck damaged the truck’s refrigerator unit.

The cadavers were from the Medical Education Research Institute in Memphis, Tenn., and were headed to a medical course for neurosurgeons in Slidell, La., Medtronic officials said.

The accident remains under investigation.

Drowning of Vicksburg teacher and pastor ruled accidental

The Warren County Deputy Coroner said the drowning death of a Vicksburg teacher, who was also pastor at a local church, has been ruled accidental. Thirty-two year old Quincy Jones was found floating in his backyard pool, by his wife, on Aug. 7.

Authorities said Jones was found in the deep end of the pool, but did not state how long he had been there.

Deputy Coroner Kelda Bailess said the autopsy showed that Jones also had severe coronary artery disease, but that was not a factor in his death.

Jones had been a teacher with the Vicksburg Warren School District for about two years and was slated to return to Grove Street School, where he taught last year.

Jones was also the pastor of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Vicksburg.

Clarksdale man shot while riding in vehicle

Captain Robbie Linley, of the Clarksdale Police Department, said they are investigating a shooting that occurred around 5:15 p.m. on Aug. 13. Linley said a black male was riding in a vehicle in the 600 block of Grant Street when shots were fired.

The victim was hit once, Linley said, and no suspects are in custody.

Wanted sex offender captured

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department has arrested one of Jackson County’s Most Wanted sex offenders. James Richard Higgason, 30, was charged with non-compliance as a sex offender. The charge is the result of an investigation conducted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department Criminal Investigations Division.

Higgason was found to be non-compliant with the Mississippi sex offender registrations laws after authorities conducted Operation Offender Watch to verify all 230 known registered sex offenders in Jackson County.

Higgason’s non-compliance occurred at the registered address he gave the Mississippi Department of Public Safety as 2225 Falcon Road located in Gautier. It was discovered during the operation that Higgason no longer lived there, but had moved to the 7600 block of Canton Drive in Biloxi without notifying the authorities, which is required by law.

Higgason was taken into custody
