School bus and 18-wheeler collide, cause unknown

SHAW – A 10-year old girl was killed Friday morning and at least six others seriously injured when her school bus and an 18-wheeler collided in the intersection of Miss. Highway 450 and U.S. Highway 61 in Shaw. Taliyah McRoy, a fifth-grader from Choctaw, was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency responders found that both vehicles flipped over on impact.

Jon Kalahar, of the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, confirmed that the accident occurred around 7:20 a.m. on April 1. Officials from the Mississippi Highway Patrol have not released the cause or any specific details about the accident, but said it remains under investigation.

Kalahar also said at least 10 people were hurt, but he could not confirm how many were students.

The Bolivar Commercial said that six people were transferred to Delta Regional Medical Center in Greenville, two were transferred to North Sunflower Medical Center in Ruleville, one was transferred to The Med in Memphis and another was transferred to UMC in Jackson.

The driver of the 18-wheeler, from Southeast Gravel Company in Arkansas, was treated at Greenville along with five children who were scheduled to be released by Friday evening.

School officials said the bus was from the Shaw School District and was carrying students ranging from kindergarten to high school.

The Bolivar Commercial reported that grief counselors were at both schools Friday, McEvans and Shaw High, to talk with students and would remain on campus throughout this week as well.
