Rho Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will hosts a United Nations (UN) Day event on October 28, 2015 at the Piney Woods School, located at 5096 US 49, Piney Woods, MS 39148 from 9 a.m.- 12 p.m.

UN Day marks the anniversary of its entry into force in 1945 by way of the UN Charter.

According to the United Nations, nearly 842 million people are suffering from hunger globally. Hunger kills more people every year than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.

In addition, hunger causes the deaths of about five million children each year. In light of these startling statistics, this year’s program will focus on global hunger.

Sharon Bridges, president of the Rho Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. expressed the importance of this event saying, “We are thrilled to partner with Piney Woods Country Life School in celebrating United Nations Day.

“Hunger is an issue impacting diverse communities globally. We will endeavor to lend our voice to raise awareness and encourage broad support in an attempt to alleviate hunger around the world.”

This event is being conducted as part of the partnership of Alpha Kappa Alpha with UNA-USA as a way to increase awareness about the function of the United Nations and its impact on the global community.

Students and community will engage in a panel discussion and dialogue about global hunger, its causes and possible solutions.

Community partners for the event are Catholic Charities and the Tougaloo College Owens Health and Wellness Center’s Farm Aid Program.

The program is sponsored through funding from the Ebony Pearls Foundation.
