Brandon church to stage ‘powerful’ gospel play, ‘Prodigal

BRANDON – Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church is hosting its annual holiday drama production. This year’s production is titled “Prodigal.” The play will take place Dec. 11 and 12 at 7 p.m. in the church’s Family Life Center.

“Prodigal” tells the story of two siblings who, as they reached adulthood, became estranged as life steered them in different directions. It tells the story of a torn family, who through their faith in God, are able to find their way back together. It’s a story that everyone can relate to in some way, and it emphasizes the importance of faith.

The play is absolutely free to the public and is sure to entertain.

Toby Johnson, musical director of “Prodigal,” is looking forward to working on his second production with the church. Johnson works with the background singers and music. He is also the pianist for the play. He said he was surprised to see such a large audience last year. “If you like jazz, gospel, or whatever you’re into, it will get to you,” Johnson explained.

Toby Johnson and “The Gifts” are slated to do special performances during the production.

Last year’s production drew a turnout of 800-1000 people, and this year is sure to be a hit according to Director of the Drama Ministry Marie Evans. Evans has held her title since 1998. She is very enthusiastic about the play.

She said, “It’s family entertainment that will make you laugh, cry, or you might even shout. This is entertainment for audiences of all kinds, which sends a positive message.”

She explained that the play is an opportunity to get the family out of the house and experience something different as opposed to going to a movie or watching a DVD. “It’s in your face entertainment with a feel good message,” Evans said.

The public is urged to bring friends, family, a date, or come alone to witness great entertainment in a great atmosphere.

Under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Ava Sanchez Harvey Sr., the church is located at 925 Trickhambridge Road, Brandon, Miss.
