The Mississippi Blues Trail received a “Tourism for Tomorrow” award, which recognizes the accomplishments of a destination, company or organization in the realm of sustainable tourism with a project that promotes tourism development while safeguarding local culture and/or protecting the environment.

Tylertown man sentenced on federal drug charges

Tony Ervin, also known as ‘Ti“, 36, of Tylertown, has been sentenced by U.S. District Judge Keith Starrett to serve 74 months in federal prison followed by four years of supervised release for possession with intent to distribute cocaine base (“crack”).

Ervin was also ordered to pay $11,700 in restitution, and a $2,000 fine. He agreed to forfeit real property, a Cadillac Escalade, two firearms, and multiple rounds of ammunition.

Jackson man loses appeal in double homicide

The state Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction of Jamal Johnson for the killing two men in a south Jackson apartment in 2009.

Jamal Johnson was convicted of two counts of capital murder in the deaths of Quintyn Wilson and Fred Smith. Johnson was sentenced to two life sentences in 2011 in Hinds County.

Appeal to be heard in case of teen who killed father

The Mississippi Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments tomorrow, Nov. 27, in an appeal from a Biloxi man convicted of killing his father.

Dante Evans was 16 when he was convicted in Harrison County of murder in the April 13, 2007, shooting death of his father, 40-year-old Darold Lee Evans. Dante Evans was sentenced to life in prison in 2009.

Teen charged with stabbing dad’s girlfriend

A 17-year old Vardaman teen has been charged with aggravated assault after he allegedly stabbed his father’s girlfriend in the back. Tyler Haire remains in custody in the Calhoun County jail on a $200,000 bond after the alleged incident on Saturday, Nov. 17.
Calhoun County Sheriff Greg Pollan said authorities were called to a residence on County Road 433 around 12:40 that afternoon. […]

Gulfport man gets 20 years for sexual abuse of girls

A 40-year-old Gulfport man will spend 20 years in prison – day for day – for the sexual abuse of two girls, ages 7 and 9. Roosevelt Jones was sentenced in Harrison County Circuit Court after pleading guilty to one count each of sexual battery and touching of a child for lustful purposes.

Judge Larry Bourgeois sentenced Jones to 25 years and suspended five years, leaving 20 to serve, followed by five years of probation.

Campbell, 1st black Olympic decathlon winner, dies

Milt Campbell, who became the first African-American to win the Olympic decathlon in 1956 and went on to play pro football and become a motivational speaker, has died, his family said. He was 78.

Linda Rusch, Campbell’s partner of 13 years, said Campbell died Friday, Nov. 2 at his home in Gainesville, about 55 miles northwest of Atlanta. She said he had been fighting prostate cancer for a decade. […]

A suspect wanted by police in Hattiesburg on a murder charge has been arrested in Lorain, Ohio.

The Hattiesburg American reports 37-year-old Tamira Peoples was arrested without incident at around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8. Police say her 3-year-old son was with her.

Weaver sentenced to 25 years for sex with boys

A former Boy Scouts of America volunteer has been sentenced to serve 25 years in prison on two counts of having sex with boys.

Donnie Weaver of Okolona pleaded guilty on Nov. 7 in Lee County Circuit Court to two counts of sexual battery.

Authorities say the incidents occurred during camping trip during the summer of 2010.
