Two children thrown from a truck

Police have charged a Jackson man with driving under the influence after his truck collided with two other vehicles on Friday, throwing at least two children from the back of his truck.

Don Sayles, 45, was arrested and also charged with two child restraint violations after the accident on July 16. According to police, the accident occurred on Beasley Road and Glencross Drive. Sayles was driving a pickup truck when he hit a sport utility vehicle.

Police said Sayles had four children, ages 4, 6, 9 and 10, in his truck at the time, and that the 6 and 10-year old were riding in the back.

When the two vehicles made contact, police said the 10-year old landed on the front windshield of a minivan at a nearby stop sign. The 6-year old was later seen running across the grass in a panic. Witnesses were able to subdue the child and calm him down until authorities arrived.

Police said the 4 and 6-year old were in the cab of the truck and suffered only minor injuries. The two who were ejected were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Their condition is not known. The accident remains under investigation.

Man gets 10 years in old meth case

A man who was convicted of selling meth nearly three years ago has been sentenced to 10 years in jail after failing to show up for court. Wallace Clayton Russell, 53, of Kiln, received his sentence, with no parole, from circuit court judge Roger Clark.

Russell admitted to selling meth in a plea hearing in 2007, but two months later, he failed to appear for his sentencing hearing.

Russell will serve the 10 years, day for day, for possession with intent to distribute more than 100 doses of meth.

Russell was initially arrested in November 2005 after he was pulled over during a routine traffic stop in Harrison County. During a search of his vehicle, deputies reportedly found 55.49 grams of meth in a gardening glove under the vehicle’s frame.
