TCHULA, Mississippi -(AP) — Officials are investigating an accident Tuesday involving Amtrak’s City of New Orleans train and an 18-wheeler in Mississippi.
Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said the train was headed to New Orleans with 152 passengers and 11 crew members when the accident occurred in Holmes County about 9:30 a.m.

BERLIN (AP) — The U.S. National Security Agency is able to crack protective measures on iPhones, BlackBerry and Android devices, giving it access to users’ data on all major smartphones, according to a report Sunday in German news weekly Der Spiegel.
The magazine cited internal documents from the NSA and its British counterpart GCHQ in which the agencies describe setting up dedicated teams for each type of phone as part of their effort to gather intelligence on potential threats such as terrorists.

Efforts to raise money to repair and build highways just don’t have the broad push that lifted a major highway program to passage in the Legislature a generation ago.
Leaders of the Mississippi Department of Transportation and their allies in the Legislature continue to make the case that they need hundreds of millions of dollars per year to repave roads and fix bridges, as well as keep building new ones.

(AP) WASHINGTON – The NAACP’s board is forming a search committee to find the next president and CEO for the nation’s largest civil rights organization, its chairwoman said Monday.
Chairwoman Roslyn Brock said during a conference call that she expects the change in leadership to be an orderly transition. Outgoing NAACP President Benjamin Jealous also used the call to elaborate on his desire to spend time with his children, a reason he cited in his announcement the previous day. His departure is effective Dec. 31.
