LORMAN, Mississippi (AP) — Arnold Walker rushed for two fourth-quarter touchdowns, leading Alcorn State to a comeback win over Mississippi Valley State 35-28 Saturday in the conference opener for both teams.

Jones and Totten to be honored at Legends Reception

Former Mississippi Valley State quarterback Willie Totten and the late defensive lineman David “Deacon” Jones will be two of five former HBCU standouts to be honored Thursday, Aug. 31 at 6 p.m. at the MEAC/SWAC Legends Reception in Orlando, hosted by ESPN. 

The Legends Award was established in 2009 to pay tribute to extraordinary alumni who have used their respective MEAC and SWAC university education to bring excellence to their professional achievements and/or community service endeavors whether local, statewide, nationally or globally.

Lillie Ayers, key figure in historic lawsuit, dies at 85

Lillie B. Ayers, who became the lead plaintiff in Mississippi’s college desegregation lawsuit after the death of her husband, Jake Ayers, died Sunday at her home in Glen Allan in Washington County. She was 85.

Henry Ayers, Lillie Ayers’ son, said his mother died of complications from bone cancer.

Mississippi Valley State will play the remainder of its home baseball games at Greenville’s Legion Field.

Athletic director Ashley Robinson says unsafe playing conditions at Valley’s field in Itta Bena prompted the decision.

Robinson says playing field is not suitable or safe enough to have baseball players risking a possible injury. […]

Alcorn State beats Mississippi Valley State 72-67

Marquiz Baker scored 27 points and Alcorn State held on to beat Mississippi Valley State 72-67 Saturday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game.

LeAntwan Luckett added 19 points and five assist for Alcorn State (6-14, 4-1).

MVSU (1-13, 1-3) shot just 34.6 percent (9 for 26) in the first half and Baker scored 21 points in the period as Alcorn State led at halftime 36-24. […]

Jackson State disappoints fans in home opener

After being on the road to open the season for three consecutive weeks, JSU played their first home game in front of an announced crowd of over 20,000. Low numbers since the last time Southern came to Jackson. Saturday’s (Sept. 22) game against Southern was a great example of how Tiger fans are feeling. Let me explain. At this point in the season, die hard fans expected to be at least 2 & 2 after Saturday, not 1 & 3.
