Study: 15 percent of U.S. youth out of work and school, Mississippi ranks low

WASHINGTON (AP) — Almost 6 million young people are neither in school nor working, according to a study released October 21.

That’s almost 15 percent of those aged 16 to 24 who have neither desk nor job, according to The Opportunity Nation coalition, which wrote the report.

Other studies have shown that idle young adults are missing out on a window to build skills they will need later in life or use the knowledge they acquired in college. Without those experiences, they are less likely to command higher salaries and more likely to be an economic drain on their communities… […]

Mississippi sees drop in number of SIDS deaths

JACKSON, Mississippi (AP) — Mississippi state health officials say the number of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome deaths in the state has declined by more than half from 2011 to 2012.

In 2012, the state reported 21 SIDS deaths, a rate of 0.5 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, compared to 43 deaths in 2011, a rate of 1.1 infant deaths per 1,000 live births… […]

U.S. gas prices drop 14 cents over past 2 weeks; Mississippi fourth lowest in nation

CAMARILLO, California (AP) — The average U.S. price of a gallon of gasoline has dropped 14 cents over the past two weeks.

The Lundberg Survey of fuel prices released Sunday says the price of a gallon of regular is $3.38. Midgrade costs an average of $3.58 a gallon, and premium is $3.71.

Diesel was down 4 cents at $3.92 gallon.

Mississippi has the fourth-lowest gas prices in the country with an average of $3.11 per gallon for regular… […]
