SHAW – A 19-year old woman is scheduled for a preliminary hearing this month after she reportedly stabbed her cousin because she wouldn’t return her sunglasses. Eltoressa Hawkins was charged with aggravated assault after she allegedly stabbed her cousin, 21-year old Octavia Hawkins, in the chest on June 15.

Shaw Police Chief Levi Ford said the altercation began at the grandmother’s house on Ricks Street in Shaw.

“The sunglasses belonged to Eltoressa,” Ford said. “And she said Octavia borrowed them on the weekend and when she came back to get them, Octavia couldn’t [find] them.”

Ford said Eltoressa “became impatient” and the situation escalated.

“The verbal altercation occurred and that led to the physical altercation,” he said.

Reportedly, Eltoressa left the room, returned with a knife and stabbed Octavia, who was holding her 5-month old baby, in the chest.

Ford said several other relatives were in the home at the time of the assault, including the grandmother, sisters and aunts of the women, and they tried to break up the altercation.

Eltoressa subsequently left the residence, but turned herself in to police later that day.

Octavia was transported to the Bolivar County Medical Center, reportedly with a puncture to her heart and lung.

Ford said she has since been released. The infant was not injured.

Eltoressa was transported to the Bolivar County jail and her bond was set at $5,000.

Ford said the evidence in the case is being prepared to present to the grand jury in time for the September term of circuit court.
