Woman raped in church parking lot, supect headed to court

PLANTERSVILLE – A 23-year old Tupelo man will go before the Lee County Grand Jury in January on charges he raped a woman in a church parking lot. Anthony Tyron Turner was arrested on Nov. 14, after he allegedly lured a woman to the parking lot and sexually assaulted her.

Plantersville Police Chief Maury Schuh said the victim was acquainted with Turner and willingly gave him a ride before the alleged assault.

“She’d known him,” Schuh said. “But she hadn’t seen him in several years. It was early morning, about 3 a.m., and they met up and she gave him a ride. He directed her to a church parking lot on Shannon Street, so he could get out there. And that’s where [the rape] occurred.”

Schuh said the victim managed to break free from Turner and ran about 50 yards to a nearby residence and asked for help. The woman told police the people living in the house were Turner’s relatives and they refused to help her.

“That’s what she said,” Schuh said. “The people refused to help her. When they first got to the parking lot, [Turner] attempted to rape her, but she managed to get free. And when he caught up with her afterwards that’s when he actually committed the sexual act.”

Schuh said Turner was arrested later that day near the scene of the alleged rape and he was taken into custody without incident. Authorities also found crack cocaine on Turner valued at about $50.

Turner remains behind bars and the case is still under investigation.
