Driver charged with simple assault

A court case involving a school bus driver from Humphreys County who allegedly assaulted a child in his care, has been continued. Don Reed, Jr., appeared in Humphreys County Court this week after he was charged with simple assault on a minor following an incident that occurred in November. Authorities said Reed allegedly pushed a special needs child off the bus and then tried to drive off with the child’s arm and foot trapped in the door. The case will be heard in Belzoni.

Two men shot outside bar

Greenville Police are investigating another shooting this week after two men were shot outside of the Old Timer’s Bar on Nelson Street. DelMelcano Scott, 36, was shot once around 10 p.m., and taken to Delta Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released. Jammie Haynes, 25, was shot three times and he was transported to the same hospital and was listed in fair condition. News reports said that police are still searching for a motive and suspects in this case.

Two MVSU employees charged with theft

Two Mississippi State University employees were arrested this week and charged with stealing school property, after an investigation showed they stole several flat screen TVs. Curtis Barfield, 46, and John Price, 23, were taken into custody after police said Barfield allegedly took four flat screen televisions from the university and Price allegedly took one. Reports said that Price later turned the set he took over to police. Police are still investigating the case and expect to make more arrests in connection with the thefts.

Postal worker charged with stealing medications

A former Hattiesburg postal worker plead guilty this week to stealing medications that were being mailed to veterans. The medications were found in Walter McClain’s locker after two of his colleagues reported the them missing. McClain entered his guilty plea in U.S. District Court in Hattiesburg on Wednesday. He will be sentenced on March 31.

Reports indicate that McClain has been seeing a psychologist for his problems.

Two people charged in case of body found

Alcorn County officials have filed charges against a man and a woman after a body was discovered in the Tuscumbia River in October.

Aaron Hastings of Corinth and Amanda Ervin Wilbanks have been charged with the disposal of a corpse by the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department. Wilbanks is the daughter of former McNair County Sheriff Paul Ervin.

The body of 50-year old Donna Hill, of Ramer, Tennessee, was found by a hunter two months ago. According to reports, the case is being handled by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations, and they have no evidence showing that Hill was killed in Alcorn County. The means of Hill’s death has not been disclosed.

State Health Officer Dr. Ed Thompson Dies

A spokesman for the Mississippi Department of Health confirmed that long time health officer and department head, Dr. Ed Thompson died earlier this month.

Thompson, 62, served two terms as state health officer. The Associated Press stated that in 2007, Thompson returned to the MSDH after working at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta for three years. Thompson also served as the Mississippi State Health officer from 1993 to 2002.

As the state’s health chief, Thompson was credited with progress in the areas of infant mortality, sexually transmitted diseases and increasing public health field staff.

Search on for two sex offenders

Washington County officials and the U.S. Marshals are looking for two fugitive sex offenders who failed to register. Arthur Smith and Joseph Wilson are both wanted for failing to register, as required by law. Reports indicate that Smith was convicted of sexual battery in Leflore County in November 2000, and he has not checked in with authorities since February 2008.

Wilson, who was convicted of sexual assault in the state of New Jersey, has not registered since November 2008.

Woman charged in husband’s murder

The Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department has charged a Maben woman with murder after her husband’s body was found in a rural area of the county.

Verina Marie Childes, 37, has been arrested and charged with the murder of her husband, 32-year old Douglas Marion Childes. Childes’ body was found by hunters late last month about a mile off Hawkins Road. Investigators said that Childes, who reportedly had been hunting with his wife, had been shot once.

Verina Childes bond was set at $125,000.
