Presidential picks at JSU and ASU are final

Though considered a formality, the two preferred candidates for presidential posts at Alcorn State University (ASU) and Jackson State University (JSU) were on their respective campuses this week for a round of discussions with faculty, staff, students, alumni, community, business and religious leaders.

The all-day process happened Tuesday, Nov. 30, on the campus of ASU and Wednesday, Dec. 1, on the main campus of JSU. Both yielded the same results with the ‘preferred’ choices being confirmed.

For ASU, the state college board hired Fisk University executive vice president and provost Christopher Brown as its 18th president. Brown, 38, is a Charleston, S.C., native and becomes the youngest person to lead a public university in Mississippi.

“I am certainly very excited very humbled by the entire experience and opportunity,” Brown said after the announcement. “I am also slightly tired, and my voice not 100 percent, but it’s been a great day.”

Brown will earn $192,937 yearly.

For JSU, the state college board hired former Norfolk State University President Carolyn Meyers as its 10th president. Meyers, 64, is a Virginia native and becomes the first female to lead the institution full time.

“It’s been an exciting day. Jackson State is an exciting place, and I’m looking forward to being a part of its future.

Meyers holds degrees from Howard University and Georgia Tech. and will be paid an annual salary of $270,500.

Both presidential picks are slated to begin their tenure in January 2011.
