Nearly 350 workers let go in two years

Viking Range Corporation in Leflore County announced that 20 more employees were being laid off from their plant’s hourly workforce. Bill Crump, Director of Governmental Affairs and Executive Assistant to the President, said in a statement: “Viking continues to experience reduced order rates on our built-in refrigerator product line and we have now been forced to adjust our schedule and line rates down to match customer demand. Having to take this measures is always difficult, but it is a necessary step to keep our costs in line with our order rate…”

WABG reported that employees were given a day’s notice before being let go. Viking, the second largest employer in Leflore County, has cut 347 jobs since April 2008.

Teen shot in the knee

The Greenville Police Department is searching for a suspect in the shooting of a local teen injured while walking down the street. Captain Andrew Kaho said Kendrick Jones was walking near the 900 block of Nelson Street, on Feb. 20, when he suddenly heard gunshots.

The teen said he ran for cover but was struck in the right knee. Captain Kaho said the incident occurred around 4 a.m.

Jones was transported to UMC in Jackson where he was listed in stable condition.

Greenville Police are continuing their investigation.

Hollandale grocery store burns down

Authorities in Hollandale are investigating a late night blaze that destroyed a community favorite. WABG reported that Smitty’s Grocery Store on King Drive was destroyed when it caught fire around 9 p.m., Feb. 19.

Hollandale Fire Chief Albert Jernigan said the store was closed when the fire began and firefighters had the blaze under control within an hour. There were no reported injuries.

The state’s fire marshal was called in to investigate the cause.
