Murderer on the loose in Greenville

GREENVILLE – Authorities in Washington County are looking for a man that robbed a woman at gunpoint and then shot and killed her friend. Captain Andrew Kaho, of the Greenville Police Department, said the suspect, described only as “black male wearing a ski mask,” walked into Linda Malone’s apartment, about 1 a.m., Feb. 1, pulled a gun and demanded money.

“From what we understand,” Kaho said, “they were playing cards in the apartment, Ms. Malone, James Jefferson – the shooting victim – and another person. Mr. Jefferson was staying with Ms. Malone at the time, but he left the residence and they continued playing cards. The door was unlocked and the black male came in.”

Kaho said the masked suspect was alone and armed.

“He had a weapon and he demanded money,” Kaho said. “Ms. Malone got up to get the money, about $2,000, and he took it and left the residence. And that’s when a shot was heard.”

Kaho said Malone and another friend came outside of the first floor apartment and found Jefferson lying facing down on the ground. He had been shot once in the head.

The Greenville Police Department arrived at the Magnolia Arms Apartment Complex on McCallister Street, and found 33-year old Jefferson dead. He was pronounced at the scene by Washington County Coroner Methel Johnson.

Police are still investigating the murder and the robbery and according to Kaho several people have been questioned in the case.

Kaho said they currently have no suspects in custody, and this is the first armed robbery of this nature, in the city.

Crimestoppers has offered at $1,000 reward for information leading to the capture and arrest of a suspect in this case. Anyone with information can call the Greenville Police Department at 662.378.1515 or Crimestoppers at 662.378.TIPS.
