Missing girl found, taken into custody

LEFLORE COUNTY – A 14-year old girl reported missing by her father on Sept. 29, has been returned home, Sheriff Ricky Banks said this week.

Sharnarius Lindsey, a student at Amanda Elzy High School, was released into the custody of her father, Lashun Lindsey, on Tuesday, Oct. 13, after she was found by the Leflore County Sheriff’s Department and placed in a juvenile detention center.

Lindsey said his daughter was last seen about 10:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at her family’s home in Leflore County. Lindsey said his daughter has a history of behavioral problems and had just been suspended from school for three days. He said she continued to cause problems when she came home and later that night she was gone.

Sheriff Banks confirmed that Sharnarius had run away before, but had never been gone this long.

During their investigation, authorities learned that Sharnarius was probably headed to Memphis, and was staying with an unidentified adult in the Leflore County area. When the sheriff’s department obtained a warrant to search the premises, they found Sharnarius and she was taken into custody and sent to the Leflore County Juvenile Detention Center.

“When a kid runs off,” Sheriff Banks said, “most of the time they get involved with other people older than them and sometimes it’s hard to find them. We learned she was in this house and we had to have documentation to get into that house. And once she was picked up, she had to have a hearing, instead of being released to her parents and we had that [this week].”

Leflore County Youth Court would not release the details regarding Sharnarius’ release, but Sheriff Banks said further charges against the adult involved in housing her are pending.

“We’re just getting into the findings of it,” he said. “And we’re trying to get the cooperation of the victim in this case, and her family is trying to get her to cooperate with us.”
