Miss. lawmakers return, but no sign of budget deal

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Mississippi lawmakers returned to the Capitol on Wednesday with no indication that they’d finish writing a $5 billion state budget before their midnight deadline.

Legislators are feeling pressure because the new state fiscal year begins July 1.

If the regular session ends with no budget deal, Republican Gov. Haley Barbour will call lawmakers back sometime this month for a special session, and he will have more control over what they consider.

A special session will cost the state roughly $13,000 more per day than a regular session, because every legislator would receive $75 a day in special session pay.

The House on Wednesday tried – and failed – to adopt a resolution that would’ve extended the session.
