Memorial set for 20-year old MSU football player

STARKVILLE – Friends and fans still in shock from the tragic death of Nick Bell, will honor him at 6:30 p.m., tonight, at an on-campus memorial at Mississippi State University. Bell, a sophomore at MSU and a defensive end for the Bulldogs’ football team, died Tuesday afternoon after a brief battle with cancer. Bell was 20-years old.

Funeral services for Bell will be Saturday, Nov. 6, at noon at Faith Chapel Christian Center in Birmingham, Ala. The church is located at 100 Lexington Street.

And a viewing will be held Friday from 1-6 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home, at 1337 Bessemer Road in Birmingham.

Both the funeral and viewing are open to the public.

The Clarion-Ledger reported that fellow students and fans honored Bell’s memory Tuesday night when they rang their cowbells at exactly 7:36 p.m. The time, 7:36, was chosen because Mississippi State has won seven games, and the number on Bell’s football jersey is 36.

Bell, who graduated from Jess Lanier High School in Bessemer, Ala., was diagnosed with cancer in late September after complaining of headaches during football practice.

On Oct. 1, Bell had surgery to remove a mass from his brain, and doctors were hopeful about his recovery. But Bell took a turn for the worse, and died a day after having emergency surgery on Nov. 1.

Bell is survived by his mother Linda, and his sisters.
