Died of natural causes, coroner says

Authorities believe that a man that was found dead in his car on the Natchez Trace Parkway died of natural causes. Local news stations reported that 56-year old Rodger Smith, of Pearl, died from a pre-existing medical condition, WLBT reported. Smith was discovered Saturday, just before noon by a park ranger patrolling the trace. Smith was inside his vehicle.

The coroner identified Smith and confirmed that he was the owner of Energy Piping Inc., with offices in Jackson and West Virginia, WLBT said.

Two arrested for shooting local disc jockey

Two people have been charged for their role in the shooting of Greenwood DJ Melvin “Casper” Bacon. Greenwood Police said Rodney Davis, 18, and Jessica Purnell, 19, were arrested and charged with aggravated assault for allegedly trying to rob 49-year old Bacon at the Snowden Jones Apartments on Jan. 4. Bacon was shot and transported to a Jackson hospital where he underwent surgery, local news reports said.

Davis and Purnell were apprehended and Davis was charged with aggravated assault and attempted robbery. His bond was set at $50,000. Purnell was charged with aggravated assault and her bond was set at $25,000. Both suspects were transported to the Leflore County Jail.

Hermanville man shot at nightclub

Claiborne County Sheriff Frank Davis said his department is still investigating a shooting that took place at a local nightclub. Chanery Walker, of Hermanville, was shot in the upper right shoulder after local news reports said a dispute broke out at Club 462 on U.S. Highway 462, about 10 miles northeast of Port Gibson.

The incident occurred early Saturday morning around 2 a.m.

WLBT reported that the club’s security guard, Edric Gatdula, was arrested for the shooting.

Delta State Professor pleads guilty to child porn

A Delta State University Professor pleaded guilty to child pornography charges and he will receive his prison sentence in about two months. Dr. Adam Lynde entered his plea before a Federal District Court Judge in Aberdeen last week after being indicted and arrested in 2009.

Lynde was charged after having in his possession a USB storage device and computer files containing graphic images of child pornography that had been shipped though Interstate and foreign commerce, WABG reported.

Delta State University placed Lynde on administrative leave pending the outcome of his case.

Two school buses collide

Rankin County Sheriff Ronnie Pennington said 11 students and a bus driver were injured Friday when two school buses collided with each other on U.S. Highway 469. According to local news reports, one school bus rear-ended the other Friday afternoon, but reportedly, none of the injuries were life-threatening.

The accident remains under investigation.
