Ford recalls 370,000 cars

NEW YORK — Ford is recalling 370,000 cars due to potential corrosion to their steering shaft that may result in loss of steering.

No incidents or injuries have been reported.

AirGuide celebrates grand opening in Clarksdale

CLARKSDALE – Gov. Phil Bryant, officials from AirGuide and local officials recently celebrated the grand opening of the company’s manufacturing operations in Clarksdale. The governor and company officials announced last August AirGuide’s plans to locate in Clarksdale.

Miss. Power paying ex-president $150,000 a year

Even though Ed Day retired abruptly as Mississippi Power’s president earlier this year, he’s still getting paid.

Day is being paid $150,000 a year for three years as a consultant, according to a stock filing by the Southern Co., the Atlanta-based parent of Mississippi Power. That’s in addition to his company retirement.

The agreement began May 20, when Day retired, according to the stock filing. It requires Day to be available up to four days each month to help Mississippi Power address lawsuits, government investigations or regulatory filings. […]

Tecumseh products expanding operations in Verona

Governor Phil Bryant and officials from Tecumseh Products Company have announced the creation of up to 150 new jobs over the next five years and the retention of 350 jobs at their Verona facility to meet the increased global demand for their products.

The expansion represents a significant multi-million dollar investment for Tecumseh.

Tecumseh manufactures refrigeration and air conditioning products and, is expanding production of the energy efficient AE2 commercial refrigeration compressor to better serve the North American market.  […]

Nissan breaks ground on $50 million new supplier park

Nissan expanded its U.S. manufacturing footprint this week with Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant joining Nissan employees to break ground on a reportedly one million square foot, $50 million new supplier park at the company’s Canton, Miss. vehicle assembly plant.

The project will support more than 800 jobs, including an expected 400 newly created supplier jobs as well as 400 employees that Nissan has hired since June 1 in anticipation of the project.

The State of Mississippi has reportedly given Nissan more than a billion dollars in incentives. […]

Sears store closing in Gautier

The Sears and Sears Auto Center in Gautier will be closed for good in mid-October.

Howard Riefs, director of corporate communications with Sears Corporation, said in a press release received by The Sun Herald the store will begin a liquidation sale July 26.

Riefs says the 71 employees will have an opportunity to apply at other Sears and Kmart stores in the area.

He says store closures are part of a series of actions the company is taking to reduce ongoing expenses. […]

Economy impacts Natchez casino market

Despite increased revenues since the city’s second casino opened in December, a Mississippi gambling expert says it could take several years for Natchez to see substantial growth to the local casino market.

Former University of Southern Mississippi professor, researcher and author Dr. Denise Runge said she would, of course, not have expected local gambling revenues to instantaneously double with the opening of a new casino.

“It’s so hard to draw real clear comparisons because (Magnolia Bluffs Casino) opened up on the tail end of a recession going into recovery,” she said. […]

Green Circle locating wood pellet operations to George County

Officials from Green Circle Bio Energy said the company is locating an energy wood pellet manufacturing facility in the George County Industrial Park. The project represents a company investment of $115 million and will create 126 jobs with the potential of up to 141.

The majority of the project’s jobs will be at the George County facility with the remainder being at the Port of Pascagoula. Additional temporary jobs will also be created during plant construction. 

The facility is expected to be operational by spring 2015 and will produce wood pellets for shipment from the Port of Pascagoula to European markets to be sold to electric generating facilities as a renewable alternative to coal. Initially, the plant will have the capacity to produce 500,000 tons of wood pellets per year. […]

Late Miss. cotton planting amplifies bug threat

Farmers are finally catching up on cotton planting, but experts are worried that the late start could expose the crop to more insects than if wet weather hadn’t delayed planting.

Mississippi farmers had intended to plant corn on many acres in hopes of cashing in on high prices. But winter and spring rains left many fields waterlogged, making it hard for tractors to plant as early as required for corn.

Cotton and soybeans can be planted later, and farmers’ plans for cotton ballooned to 340,000 acres from what had been projected to be a historic low of about 200,000. Mississippi farmers planted 580,000 acres of cotton in 2012. […]

Hankins Lumber Company re-opening in Grenada

Officials from Hankins Lumber Company announced this week that the company is reopening its facility in Grenada following a 15-month closure due to the downturn in the economy.

The project represents a $1.5 million investment and is creating 120 jobs, many of which will be filled by former employees working at the facility when it closed.

A producer of southern yellow pine products, Hankins Lumber Company produces and supplies a variety of lumber and related products for commercial and residential clients throughout Mississippi, as well as the country’s retail and wholesale markets. […]
