Former governor receives FBI community leadership award

Former Mississippi Governor William F. Winter has been awarded the 2012 FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award. Daniel McMullen, Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the FBI in Mississippi, presented the award to Governor Winter during the Jackson Field Office All-Employee Conference on Dec. 7.

A 25-year-old man is in police custody after he allegedly stole a woman’s car with her 3-year-old child inside.

Bradly Scott Hilsabeck is being held by request of the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) following an incident that occurred about 6:46 p.m., Sunday.

Lt. James Massey, of the Pascagoula Police Department, said a woman was standing at her vehicle in the Walgreen’s Parking lot in the 3800 block of Market Street when Hilsabeck reportedly pushed her away and took off in her vehicle. […]

2 dead in early Saturday Jackson shootings

Jackson police are investigating two early morning homicides.

WLBT reports that the first happened around 12:30 a.m. Saturday. Police said the 38-year-old victim was shot four times in the parking lot of an apartment complex.

Another shooting happened just after 2 a.m. Saturday. A 23-year-old man was gunned down at a Jackson intersection. He was shot five times and was pronounced dead on the scene. No arrests have been reported so far as the investigations continue. […]

Two Jackson men plead guilty to federal drug charges

Willie James Williams, a/k/a Big Bug, a/k/a Chill, 33, of Jackson, and Willie Earl Culley, 51, of Jackson, have each pleaded guilty in federal court to possession with intent to distribute cocaine. The defendants were indicted in connection with Operation Paperchase, an extensive investigation targeting illegal narcotics distribution in the city of Jackson.

Williams and Culley will be sentenced by Senior U.S. District Judge David C. Bramlette, III on March 12, 2013. Both defendants face a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison and up to a $5 million fine.

11 graduate from Hinds Circuit Drug Court

The Hinds County Drug Court celebrated its 31st graduation this month in Jackson at the Hinds County Courthouse. Eleven people graduated from the two-year program.

The keynote speaker was Kevin T. Wilbert, director of operations for the University of Mississippi Medical Center Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology. Circuit Judge Winston Kidd, who supervises the Drug Court, presided over the graduation.

Mississippi State’s Wendell Lewis is expected to miss at least the next eight weeks because of a broken right kneecap.

The school says the 6-foot-9 senior from Selma, Ala., was hurt in a non-contact drill and was scheduled for surgery Monday. If ‘fiscal cliff’ talks fail, teachers’ jobs, student aid, Head Start could at risk

If budget talks fail and automatic spending cuts take hold, federal spending on education would be cut by about 8 percent across a broad range of programs, including money for special education, low-income students and schools near military bases, The Sun Herald reported.

Compounding the potential problem is that many states have been hammered by the recession and don’t have funds to cover the shortfall. The U.S. Department of Education reported that 80 percent of school districts in a recent poll said they would not have state or local funds to make up for the lost federal money. […]
