Terry Glover, Ebony managing editor, dies at 57

Terry Glover, the managing editor of Ebony magazine, died of colon cancer at her Chicago home in the Bronzeville community. Glover was 57.

Ebony announced on its website that Glover died on Monday, Dec. 24. Her husband, Kendall Glover, told the Chicago Tribune that his wife had been fighting cancer for about two years.

Tornado hits Pearl River; Gov. declares state of emergency

Mississippi’s governor Phil Bryant has declared a state of emergency for several counties hit hard after severe storms and a tornado moved through the state this week.

Emergency management personnel confirmed that a tornado did touch down in Pearl River County on Tuesday, Dec. 25, that destroyed approximately 15 homes sending at least eight people to the hospital, the Associated Press reported.

2 economic developers indicted for bribery and embezzlement

Federal officials said two women have been indicted in connection with an embezzlement and bribery scheme related to grant funds and the construction of community housing projects in the Mississippi Delta.

Connie Lewis, 52, of Jackson, an employee of the Mississippi Development Authority (MDA), faces nine counts of accepting a total of over $250,000 in cash bribes from Jimmy Stokes, a general contractor in the Mississippi Delta, in return for her influence at the MDA in directing federal grant funds to Stokes Construction Company.

Retired Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf dies at 78

Retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, who topped an illustrious military career by commanding the U.S.-led international coalition that drove Saddam Hussein’s forces out of Kuwait in 1991 but kept a low public profile in controversies over the second Gulf War against Iraq, died Thursday.

He was 78.

Schwarzkopf died in Tampa, Fla., where he had lived in retirement, according to a U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. […]

This month, the Mississippi Blues Trail’s Google Maps web page reached over 500,000 visits. The map can be accessed from the home page of the Blues Trail as well as from each individual marker page.

“Mississippi’s musical heritage continues to be a major attraction for visitors around the world,” said Brent Christensen, executive director of the Mississippi Development Authority. “Using interactive technologies like Google Maps makes the Mississippi Blues Trail both an entertaining and informative tool for those planning a visit to our state. Hershey plant strikes deal with Miss. CC

Hershey Co.’s Memphis plant has struck up a deal with Northwest Mississippi Community College to provide workers through the college’s career-technical education division.

Company officials tell The Commercial Appeal the chocolate maker was seeking a partner to train workers for the company’s recent shift toward mechatronics, a field of engineering that integrates mechanics, electronics, control theory and computer science.

MDOT seizes $500k in drugs from truck at weigh station

Enforcement officers with the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) stopped an 18-wheeler for a routine weight and safety check and discovered at least 500 pounds of marijuana.

MDOT officials said the incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. on Dec. 12. The officers stopped a 1999 Freightliner tractor and van trailer at the eastbound I-59 Lauderdale inspection facility, for a routine weight, safety and paperwork inspection.

A few snow flakes possible for Wednesday morning

There’s no need for a shovel just yet. But meteorologists are saying a few snow flurries are possible for North Mississippi early Wednesday morning.

Keith Gibson, of WCBI weather, said the best chance to see an accumulation of at least a few inches of snow will be between Memphis and Clarksdale.

“Blizzard conditions are expected in eastern Arkansas and northwestern Tennessee, if you can believe that,” Gibson said. […]

Baldwyn woman killed in Christmas Day accident

The Mississippi Highway Patrol continues to investigate an early afternoon crash in Lee County that claimed the life of a Baldwyn woman, WCBI reports.

Troopers were dispatched to the Christmas Day crash about 1 p.m., on MS 245, just south of Shannon.

Authorities said it appeared Timothy Autrey, 26, of Baldwyn, was traveling south in a 1997 Ford F-150, when he lost control of the vehicle and overturned. […]

‘Odd Couple’ actor Jack Klugman dies at 90

Jack Klugman, the prolific, craggy-faced character actor and regular guy who was loved by millions as the messy one in TV’s “The Odd Couple” and the crime-fighting coroner in “Quincy, M.E.,” died Monday, a son said. He was 90.

Klugman, who lost his voice to throat cancer in the 1980s and trained himself to speak again, died with his wife at his side. […]
