Meth lab found at hotel

News Briefs From Across the State

Twenty-fourth meth lab discovered in two weeks

An anonymous tip led Greenville police to a meth lab operating out of a local hotel room on U.S. Highway 82. Authorities said the meth lab was found at the Colonial Inn in Greenville, at the intersection of Colorado Street and 82.

When police arrived at the room in question, officers reportedly identified themselves and heard movement from inside the room. Greenville Police Chief Charles Patterson said a man came to the door and a young woman immediately ran to the bathroom.

“She threw a container into the back of the commode,” Patterson told WABG News.

Patterson said the item was a bottle of recently cooked meth.

“We’re just lucky it wasn’t open and no moisture got to it, because at that point in time…it could have been highly explosive and would’ve blown up…but…we’re blessed that didn’t happen.”

WAGB reported that 24 meth labs have been located by Greenville police within the last two weeks.

Firefighters get grants

United States Representative Bennie Thompson said that two fire departments in Mississippi have received grants from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in conjunction with the U.S. Fire Administration. Firefighters from the Sharkey/Hampton Lake Volunteer Fire Department and the Greenville Fire Department both received grants to enhance their ability to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as that of their first responder personnel.

According to Thompson, the purpose of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) has two funding priorities: (1) Operations and Safety Program Area in which eligible activities are limited to training, equipment, personal protective equipment, wellness and fitness, and health and safety modifications to stations as facilities; and (2) Vehicle Acquisition Program Area where eligible activities include but are not limited to, pumpers, aerials, quints, brush trucks, tankers/tenders, rescue vehicles, ambulances, foam units, and fireboats.

Sharkey/Hampton received a $23,750 grant while Greenville was awarded $71,630.
