JSU retired educator succumbs, age 94

Maria Luisa Jones, a Jackson State University retired educator and long time resident of Jackson, Miss., died on Aug. 5, 2009, at the home of her daughter, Evelia Lawreen Jones in Los Angeles.

Born Aug. 25, 1915, in Cienfuegos, Cuba to the late Evelio Ramirez and Clara Entenza Ramirez, Jones traveled throughout the rural parts of Cuba working as a home economist. The work she performed as a home economist in Cuba lead her to the United States where she was granted a scholarship in home economics at Fort Valley State College, Georgia.

 Jones entered Fort Valley State College in 1947, where she studied home economics and art education.  While at Fort Valley, she met the late Lawrence Jones who was head of the art department and two years later they decided to get married.

In 1950, after graduating from Fort Valley State, Jones accepted a position at Jackson State College as an art education teacher. She worked closely with her husband who was head of the art department. In addition to teaching on the college level, Jones, who specialized in art for children, taught private art lessons over the years to children and youth. She also taught Spanish at Jackson State Laboratory School, formerly located on the Jackson State campus, attended mostly by children of staff members at Jackson State.

Jones was a devoted member of Christ the King Catholic Church, where she sang in the senior choir for many years. She was also a member of the senior swingers.

Funeral services for Jones will be held in Jackson.
