New Horizon Next Level Center trains Youth

Special To The Mississippi Link

Youth training can make a difference. Demetrius Brown, a parent, said she’s interested in the New Horizon Ministries Next Level Center for Excellence after school program because it helps build basic academic skills, computer skills, and develops interpersonal skills.

Her sons, Marquez Brown, 11, and Christopher Brown, 13, are students in the NHM Comprehensive Program and have attended for approximately a year. She said her sons work more independently and are more advanced through attending the NHM program.

New Horizon Ministries, located in Jackson, provides academic support, mentoring, job readiness, career counseling, entrepreneurship training, community service and service learning opportunities to motivated students and those considered to be at risk. Bishop Ronnie Crudup established New Horizon Ministries as a community service program of New Horizon Church in 1987.

Program Director Michael Harris said the main purpose of the program is to provide students with additional academic support they need to get ahead in school and in life in general.

The program weekly schedule is Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 2:15 p.m-6:15 p.m. and Wednesday from 2:15 p.m.-5:15 p.m.

“We focus on three main areas: personal development, basic academic skills, and computer skills,” he said, adding that it’s more important is to promote a philosophy among students of embracing and engaging education.

Sekou Taylor, a volunteer, said the main goal is to get the children to be independent learners as well as more self confident in learning. Taylor volunteers through the Volunteer in Service to America Organization (VISTA).

He said, “I think confident learning will gain them a lot, especially in the public school arena because a lot of times a teacher cannot come around to each individual child and help them with their problems because the ratio in Jackson Public Schools is about one teacher to 25 or 30 students.”

Jackson State student volunteer Aaron Edwards said he enjoys helping children with work and guidance.

“This is a wonderful program and I want to come back after my hours are done because I really enjoy doing it.” He said, “And even though it’s not children from my home town I feel like I’m giving back. Children will benefit from this program.”
