Driver was uninsured

Greenville Police issued a local woman two citations after she was involved in an accident that claimed the life of another motorist. Authorities said Makeedah Johnson, 24, was issued two tickets following a crash that killed motorcyclist Dara Tate.

Officials said Johnson’s vehicle struck Tate’s motorcycle with such force that it caused his Suzuki bike to explode.

Johnson was ticketed for no driver’s license and no insurance.

The case remains under investigation, and Johnson could face additional charges if it goes before the grand jury.

Firefighters awarded grant funds

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded a grant to the Quitman-Holly Bluff Volunteer Fire Department in Yazoo City, U.S. Representative Bennie Thompson announced.

The purpose of the Assistance to Firefighter’s Grant (AFG) is to award grants directly to fire departments and EMS organizations that are unaffiliated with a hospital to enhance their ability to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as that of first responder personnel.

Thompson said the AFG has two funding priorities: The Operations and Safety Program Area in which eligible activities are limited to training, equipment, personal protective equipment, wellness and fitness, and health and safety modifications to stations as facilities; and the Vehicle Acquisition Program Area where eligible activities include, but are not limited to, pumpers, aerials, quints, brush trucks, tankers/tenders, rescue vehicles, ambulances, foam units, and fireboats.
