Area is popular with swimmers

After a three hour search, authorities found the body of a man who allegedly jumped off a bridge into the Tallahatchie River. Union County officials said the 26-year old man jumped off the bridge in the Enterprise community sometime Sunday evening, and never came up.

Dive teams searched for the unidentified man exhaustively until he was found about 11 p.m. His body is being sent to the crime lab in Jackson.

Authorities said that area is often frequented by swimmers.

A cause of death was not specified.

2 charged in laptop scam

Two men have been charged with trademark infringement after trying to sell blocks of wood and notebook binders as laptop computers. The Associated Press reported that Eddie Handford, 45, and Frank Hamilton, 54, were peddling blocks of wood covered in duct tape and bubble wrap labeled with a Toshiba sticker.

Authorities also found notebook binders filled with paper that were also being passed off as computers.

Handford and Hamilton were taken into custody on Friday after trying to sell the “computers” to an off-duty state trooper in Jackson.

They were also charged with sale of goods bearing counterfeit labels.

Garbage pick up at issue in Mound Bayou

Mayor Kennedy Johnson said Mound Bayou has been overpaying for their garbage collection service, and that disagreement has led to a halt in the service. While the city and the company work out the contract problems, Mound Bayou city crews have been collecting the trash and dumping it in a vacant lot near a residential area sparking community-wide complaints.

Johnson said Mound Bayou has about 400 homes on the trash route, but the contract billed them for 600.

15-year old injured on motorcycle

A Carroll County teen was transported to UMC Hospital after he lost control of his motorcycle and hit a tree on County Road 176. Authorities said Steven C. Weldon, who lives on that same road, was rounding a sharp curve when he hit some loose grave, lost control and hit the tree.

Weldon was airlifted to UMC and his condition is unknown.

Debris still being cleared from April storms

Three months after a monster tornado ripped through areas of Mississippi, authorities report that most of the debris has been cleared. Ten people were killed in Mississippi after the storms on April 24. Hundreds were left homeless and businesses were forced to close their doors.

Now, The Associated Press is reporting that contractors have installed new power lines and volunteers have helped to repair houses in the area.

They also said the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded $3.3 million to more than 800 applicants for individual assistance after the tornado. The Small Business Administration made nearly $2.4 million in loans, much of that going towards home repairs.

Much of the damage from the storm was in Yazoo City and Holmes County.
