Camp Pioneer Summer Camp

Special to The Mississippi Link

The organizers of Camp Pioneer are encouraging everyone interested in experiencing a dynamic adventure in God’s World and His Word to be a part of this summer’s activities in Pearl.

Located in Pearl, Miss., off of Old Whitfield Rd., Camp Pioneer will offer five weeks of excitement for its participants.

During week one, the focus will be leadership development and job readiness. The theme will be “X-treme Makeover for teens,” taken from II Corinthians 5:17.  The next three weeks will address the needs of youth between the ages of 6 – 12. Each week will have a different focus for that age group. The final week will re-unite the teens for a week of adventure.

Barbara Sanders, a member of the camp’s support staff and a former camper, considers the camp a personal blessing.

“Children learn how to have a living active faith on the field, on the court, and in their everyday lives. They have bible lessons, learn scriptures, and work with counselors who provide guidelines and inspiration to them. It is exactly what I got when I attended as a camper years ago and I want to see that others get it as well,” she said.

Sanders added that this is the first year six year olds will be able to participate in the camp and they will be just as excited about the loving, lively, out-of-doors environment as the older children.

The camp began 61 years ago by Rev. Erwin Wedel and his wife, Ruth, as a means to offer African Americans a camping adventure in a spiritual environment.

“Originally, we were the only one of our kind. Years later, we are still here doing the work of the Lord,” Sanders said.
