Mayor Johnson Declares State of Emergency

City of Jackson Communications Office

Mayor Harvey Johnson, Jr. declared a state of emergency for the city of Jackson today as city crews continue to battle numerous water line breaks throughout the city that are causing the water system to lose pressure. Some seventy water lines have broken since the arctic blast began last week.

Mayor Johnson urged residents to conserve water as much as possible throughout the next several days as crews work to bring the system back up to full capacity.

“We are asking residents to take such steps as putting off washing a load of clothes for the next couple of days if they can,” said Mayor Johnson. “Anything you can do to use less water over the next few days will be helpful.”

Mayor Johnson also extended the precautionary boil water alert for the entire city.

All customers are advised to boil their drinking water until adequate pressure is restored to the system. Water should be brought to a rolling boil for one minute for the following: cooking or baking, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula or food, mixing juices or drinks feeding pets, washing dishes and all other consumption. Water does not have to be boiled for the following activities: showering or washing clothes.

“It is also very important that residents report any water leaks they see as they travel around the city,” said Mayor Johnson.

They may call 601-960-1111 to report any water line breaks.
