Suspects arrested in death of off-duty Mississippi trooper

NATCHEZ, Miss. (AP) _ Three people are in custody on murder charges in the shooting death of an off-duty Mississippi trooper, authorities said Saturday.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, in a news release, said Treyon Washington, 24, was arrested in Jefferson County in the death of Lt. Troy L. Morris, 58, of Natchez. Morris’ body was found inside a postal service delivery truck about 4:30 a.m. Friday in Jefferson County. The 27-year veteran trooper worked part-time for the U.S. Postal Service.

Washington is being held in the county detention facility. No bond has been set. Also in custody are Damion Whittley, 25, and a 17-year-old suspect. They were arrested in New Orleans and are awaiting extradition to Mississippi, the MBI said.

It was unknown if any of the suspects had attorneys who could speak on their behalf.

“While we are pleased with the progress of this investigation, we realize there is much work left to be done,” said Col. Randy Ginn, director of the Mississippi Highway Patrol. “The tireless efforts of law enforcement have been inspiring and the public outpouring of support and concern has touched us all and has shown Lieutenant Morris’ family that Mississippians truly care about the officers who protect them.”
