VICKSBURG, Mississippi (AP) — A Brookhaven woman who was runner-up three times in the Miss Mississippi competition has finally won the crown.
The Vicksburg Post reports Sunday that Laura Lee Lewis was crowned Miss Mississippi on Saturday night during a competition at the Vicksburg Convention Center.
Lewis was second runner-up in both 2013 and 2015 and first runner-up in 2014.
“They say third time is the charm, but I guess in my case it’s the fourth,” she said after her win.
The 23-year-old Brookhaven woman will now go on to the Miss America pageant in September. She vowed to bring the national crown back to Mississippi.
“We are going to Miss America. We are going to Atlantic City and bring home the Miss America crown. It is time to bring it home; back to where it belongs,” Lewis said.
Lewis sang a Barbara Streisand song called “A Piece of Sky” for her talent competition.
She takes home a $10,000 scholarship along with the title and the crown.
Saturday night’s contest featured the top ten finalists competing in a final round that included interviews with the judges, a talent competition, swimwear, eveningwear and on-stage questions.
Anne Elizabeth Buys of Vicksburg was named first runner up. She will get a $7,500 scholarship. Molly May of Houston was second and was awarded $5,000. Holly Harrington of Tupelo was third and Mia Hall of Meridian was fourth. Both the third and fourth runner-ups receive a $2,500 scholarship.
Four crown winners from Mississippi have gone on to win the Miss America title. The last one was Susan Akin of Meridian in 1986.
