MONROE, La. (AP) – Charged in the burning death of north Mississippi teenager Jessica Chambers, Quinton Tellis goes on trial Monday on charges connected to another woman’s death in north Louisiana. Tellis faces trial in Monroe for using a debit card belonging to Meing-Chen Hsiao. The former Taiwanese exchange student was stabbed to death in her apartment in August.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) – New Orleans police say a 50-year-old man is accused of attacking his ex-girlfriend in the French Quarter and then stabbing one of several men who tried to intervene. Police spokesman Aaron Looney says Everett Williams and the man he allegedly stabbed both were taken to hospitals with injuries. Looney says Williams allegedly confronted and attacked the woman about 2 p.m. Sunday near Jackson Square in the heart of New Orleans’ tourist district.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) – A 30-year-old man begins his second trial this week in the death of a former Southern Mississippi basketball player who was shot in the back in December 2011. Jairus Collins was convicted in 2013 of murdering 27-year-old Ebony Jenkins, and was sentenced to life in prison. But the state Supreme Court overturned his conviction last summer. The Hattiesburg American reports that Collins’ retrial is scheduled to begin Tuesday in 12th District Circuit Court.
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Officials with the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources say two areas will be open to the harvest of oysters at sunrise Monday. Harvests will be allowed in Area 2-E, which includes Square Handkerchief Reef and southern parts of Henderson Point Reef. Also opening is Area 2-F, including southern portions of Pass Christian Reef.
