NEW ORLEANS (AP) – A standing-room-only crowd filled the Blues Tent when Arlo Guthrie began playing “Alice’s Restaurant” as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival wound up its seven-day stand on Sunday. Some of the crowd was old enough to have heard the first performance of that hit 50 years ago. Other members looked to be about the age Guthrie’s was back then. They sang along with the choruses of “Alice’s Restaurant” and with “This Land is Your Land” by Guthrie’s father, folk singer Woodie Guthrie.
VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) – Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace says his county needs a new jail, but county supervisors say that with stagnant tax receipts, they’re unsure how to finance one. The jail was built in 1907 and added onto in 1977.
PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) – Former Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd is free from court supervision. Special Circuit Judge Breland Hilburn on March 29 signed an order terminating the remainder of Byrd’s three years of probation. The Sun Herald reports Byrd served six months under house arrest and about two years under post-release supervision.
STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) – U.S. Army Reservists are bidding goodbye to their families at the U.S. Army Reserve center in Starkville, embarking on a supply mission in the Middle East. The 71 reservists departed as dawn was breaking Saturday amid claps and cheers, in two buses loaded with camouflage duffel bags bound for Sioux City, Iowa.
