MCCOMB, Miss. (AP) – A McComb pastor who’s also a former Columbia police officer has been sentenced after pleading guilty to having sex with a jail inmate.

The Enterprise-Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1SkH3W2 ) Vasan Josea Oatis won’t have to serve any prison time in the case. A judge sentenced him to five years, suspended, with four and a half years of post-release supervision. Oatis also will have to register as a sex offender.

Oatis pleaded guilty Jan. 6 to a felony charge of criminal sexual activity with certain individuals and offenders incarcerated on correctional supervision.

Court records show that Oatis, while employed by the Columbia Police Department, had consensual sex with a woman who was incarcerated at the Marion-Walthall Correctional Facility in 2013.

Oatis became pastor of Walker’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church in November 2013.
