JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A $20.5 million federal program will match SNAP recipients to workforce training and job opportunities in Mississippi.
The three-year funding was announced Monday by Gov. Phil Bryant and U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service Southeast Regional Administrator Robin Bailey Jr.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is formerly known as food stamps.
The Mississippi Department of Human Services will administer the pilot program.
Bryant says in a news release that MDHS, junior colleges other state and local agencies will help bring about 3,300 adult SNAP recipients ages 18-50 who do not have dependents into the program.
Help will be provided to participants to cover some expenses such as transportation.
Mississippi is one of 38 states to apply for the grant and one of 10 states to receive an award.
