JACKSON, Mississippi (AP) — The Mississippi House has voted to give assistant teachers a substantial pay raise.
The base pay for the job is currently $12,500 a year.
A bill that was debated Wednesday originally would have set the base pay at $13,500.
The House accepted a proposal by Democratic Rep. Cecil Brown of Jackson to set the base pay at $15,000.
Some local school districts provide salary supplements for teachers and assistant teachers.
It is unclear whether the pay plan will survive as legislators work on the state budget the next couple of months. The raise for assistant teachers could get scaled back to the original proposal. The plan is in House Bill 582.
Legislators are working on a separate proposal to give teachers the second year of a pay raise.
