Young makes history as the first Mississippi pastor to head the largest African American religious organization in the U.S.

The pastor of New Hope Baptist Church located in Jackson Mississippi has been elected the new president of the National Baptist Convention on Thursday. Rev. Jerry Young is the first Mississippi pastor to be elected to that position, making history.

Young was elected to a five-year term during the 2014 convention denomination’s 134th annual meeting held in New Orleans. to a five-year term.

He was the former President of the General Missionary Baptist State Convention of Mississippi and served as Vice President At-Large of the National Baptist Convention up to the time of his election.

The National Baptist Convention is the nation’s largest African American religious group. Young won over four other candidates for the national office.
