2 workers killed after falling from cell phone tower

From Media Reports

GEORGETOWN – Federal and local investigators are trying to determine the cause of an accident in which two workers fell to their deaths from a cellphone tower in Copiah County.

The accident happened Tuesday afternoon at a tower on Mississippi Highway 27 north of Highway 28 in Georgetown

The Copiah County coroner says the men were climbing up the 300-foot tower and were about halfway up when they fell.

Randle Drane, of the Copiah County Emergency Management Agency, said the men worked for a Louisiana company.

Michael A. Castelli, 42, of Baton Rouge, LA, and Johnny Martone, 32, of Taylorsville, MS, both died of massive blunt force trauma, according to the coroner.

Copiah County Sheriff Harold Jones said it appeared a “catastrophic failure of a cable” caused the two men to plunge to their deaths from the tower, WLBT reported.

Jones said the men were trying to put new antennas on the top of the tower.

Jones said the men’s bodies have been taken to the Mississippi Crime Lab for examination.

The Copiah County Sheriff’s Office is working closely with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration as they investigate.
