Attendees will get a chance to participate in many activities that promote MDOT’s goal of improving the safety of motorists and pedestrians by educating children and parents about child passenger safety, the dangers of distracted driving, and occupant protection. Some of the attractions include the “Rover” safety rollover demonstration, impaired driving simulations (SIDNE) as well as the low-speed simulation of a head on collision, the “Convincer.” MDOT’s virtual texting and driving simulator will also return to the event.

DREAM, Inc. will demonstrate seat belt safety with their “Rock the Belt” program, a quick-click challenge where students are paired in teams of four and race around a car and buckle up in all four positions. The team with the quickest time wins the challenge!

Safe Kids MS will have certified car seat technicians on-site to inspect and properly install child safety seats. There will be a rock climbing wall, temporary tattoos, a space jump, and concessions. The Jackson Fire Department will be present to talk with kids about fire safety.  This year the very-popular “Bike Smoothie Maker,” where participants can ride a stationary bike to power a blender and make their own fruit smoothies!

MS Safe Routes to School and the MS Department of Health will be demonstrating bicycle safety tips to kids at the bike rodeo, a fun event that’s geared towards all avid bike riders. SRTS will also provide information on how your community can identify safe routes for children traveling to and from school and hand out certificates to all children who complete the bicycle safety course. Bicycle helmets will be provided, and each child will receive one free of charge (while quantities last).  Also, be sure to enter the drawing to win one of the four bikes being used in the rodeo!

The Safety Fair is sponsored by MDOT, in partnership with Safe Kids Mississippi, Safe Routes to School, Mississippi Department of Health, Mississippi Operation Lifesaver, Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services, Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence of the Central Mississippi Area, Inc., Brain Injury Associates of Mississippi, DREAM, Inc., City of Jackson Fire Department, and Batson Children’s Hospital.
