Suspect allegedly seen on video taking beer
A Columbus man is behind bars after being charged with burglary of a commercial building.
According to authorities, 33-year-old Tamarcus Thomas was seen on the video surveillance of the Military Quick Stop convenience store breaking in through the glass front door. He then allegedly took two 18-packs of Bud Light and left.
His bond has not been set.
Southern Gaming Summit May 7-9 in Biloxi
Gary Loveman, chairman and CEO of Caesars Entertainment, will speak at the opening session of first full day of the 2013 Southern Gaming Summit in Biloxi on May 8.
The 20th annual convention is scheduled for May 8-9. Meetings will be held at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi.
Mississippi Casino Operators Association co-hosts the event with BNP Media Gaming Group.
The conference will include workshops on various gambling issues.
Loveman joined Caesars Entertainment Corp. as chief operating officer in 1998 after serving as an associate professor at the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration. He was named CEO in January of 2003.
The convention’s companion show, Bingo World Conference & Expo Bingo, will offer sessions including its popular Bingo U workshops.
Jennings loses appeal of rape conviction
The state Court of Appeals has upheld the 15-year sentence given Tony Jennings in 2011 for statutory rape.
A Lowndes County Circuit Court jury convicted Jennings of one count of statutory rape of a then-13-year-old girl. Judge Lee Coleman sentenced Jennings to 15 years with five years suspended and five years under post-release supervision.
The victim reported the incident June 9, 2010, at which time she went to the hospital.
Jennings argued in his appeal there was no evidence to support the girl’s claims.
The Appeals Court said Jennings admitted to having sexual intercourse with the girl and the girl gave a detailed account of the rape in her testimony.
The Appeals Court also rejected Jennings’ claim that his confession should not have been used on evidence.
Canton man sentenced for store robbery
A Canton man has been sentenced to serve 35 years in prison for his part in a 2012 store robbery.
District Attorney Michael Guest says Lyndon Myers was convicted in Madison County Circuit Court this past week of three counts of armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Myers was sentenced to 45 years with 10 years suspended.
Myers and Earnest Johnson were arrested for the armed robbery of a Dollar Tree in Madison. Guest says three employees were forced to put the store money into a plastic bag while being held at gunpoint.
Johnson earlier pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 40 years with 15 years suspended. Guest says Johnson testified at Myers’ trial.
