Wide load to move across Noxubee and Kemper counties

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) said a wide load will be moving through the state on Wednesday, Jan. 9.

A group of four (4) wide loads will begin their departure from Big Bee Valley in Noxubee County to the IGCC power plant in Kemper County. The loads will travel west along Highway 388 to Highway 45 and then travel south in the southbound lanes to Highway 16. From there the loads will move west along Highway 16 and will turn onto Highway 493 where it will continue to the power plant. […]

Sixth man pleads to hate crime against blacks in Jackson

Joseph Dominick, 21, from Brandon, Mississippi, pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court in Jackson, Mississippi, to one count of conspiracy to commit federal hate crimes in connection with his role in the assault of African-Americans in Jackson.

Defendants Deryl Paul Dedmon, 20; John Aaron Rice, 19; Dylan Wade Butler, 21; William Kirk Montgomery, 23; and Jonathan Kyle Gaskamp, 20, all from Brandon, have previously entered guilty pleas in connection with their roles in these offenses. The conspiracy culminated in the death of James Craig Anderson, who was assaulted and killed on June 26, 2011. […]

Victim identified in Jackson fatal fire

Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart has identified the victim in Saturday’s fatal house fire in Jackson, WLBT reported.

Grisham-Stewart said a preliminary investigation shows 58-year-old Oscar Scott died of smoke inhalation. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

A call came in about 4:15 p.m. Saturday at 1777 Southaven Circle. When crews arrived, flames could be seen shooting from the side of the home along with heavy smoke. […]

Ole Miss crushes Fordham 95-68, looks to SEC play

Mississippi looked like a team ready to begin Southeastern Conference play Friday night, routing Fordham 95-68 in the final nonconference contest for both teams.

“We’re alive. Not everybody can say their after nonconference games, but we can,” Mississippi coach Andy Kennedy said. “We want the SEC schedule to have significance, and it does.”

The Rebels (11-2) put five players in double figures, led by Marshall Henderson with 21 points. The balanced attack included Reginald Buckner with 18 points, Derrick Millinghaus with 16, Murphy Holloway with 15 and Nick Williams with 11.
The Rebels shot 50 percent from the field (33 of 66) and forced 22 Fordham turnovers. […]

Inmates harvest fall crops

Enough vegetables, including broccoli, mustard and turnip greens, are being harvested now at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman to feed the 12,000-plus offenders in the three main prisons and community work centers of the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC).

Farming is one way the state cuts down on food cost to taxpayers, plus give hundreds of inmates something to do while serving time.

In addition to vegetables, the Mississippi Prison Agricultural Enterprises (MPAE) crop production also includes rice, wheat, soybeans and corn. There’s also a poultry facility with a capacity for 36,000 hens. […]

Drax Biomass to build new plant in Gloster

Governor Phil Bryant and officials from Drax Biomass International Inc. have announced the company is planning to construct a 450,000-metric–ton-per-year wood pellet production facility in Gloster, in Amite County.

The facility, to be known as Amite BioEnergy, represents a substantial multi-million dollar investment by the company and will create 45 direct jobs, as well as additional indirect jobs during construction and in the transportation and forestry sectors once the plant is operational.

The Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) worked with company and local officials to provide assistance for road and infrastructure needs related to the project. […]

Argument about dogs turns deadly

A Harrison County man is being held on a $500,000 bond after authorities said he allegedly killed his neighbor about his dog. Joshua Adam Mizell remains behind bars following an altercation on Dec. 24, with his neighbor 37-year-old Timothy Paul Galle.

Authorities said Mizelle, 33, called 911 himself after the shooting in front of Mizelle’s residence in the 8400 block of McDonald Road.

Anderson rescinds retirement as Hinds County supervisor

With only one day left before Supervisor Doug Anderson’s resignation/retirement was scheduled to take effect, he pulled the plug on it.

After 19 years in the county post, and more than 36 years in public office, Anderson had said through his daughter, Jackie Anderson Woods, that he was giving up the post due to health concerns. Anderson had suffered a stroke last December, his second one in a six-month period. His recovery from the stroke had worried his family…. […]
