Couple also wanted for child neglect

Federal authorities haven’t given up on the search for a couple wanted in Union County for child neglect and manslaughter.

In a news release, U.S. Marshals said Janet and Ramon Barreto were last known to be living in Huntington, Calif.

The couple was free on a $450,000 bond in Union County when they disappeared in 2009. The U.S. Marshals Service says it tracked them to Mexico but lost track of them this past summer.

Authorities said the couple is known to sell small dogs through internet ads and on the street and sold DVDs and CDs out of a van.

The couple is charged with manslaughter in death of their adopted 2-year-old daughter in 2008. They also are accused of abusing eight other children and running a puppy mill.

Suspect in domestic incident shot by deputy

A suspect in a domestic violence incident in western Union County died after being shot by a Union County deputy sheriff.

Sheriff Jimmy Edwards declined to identify either the deceased or the deputy involved in the shooting.

Edwards tells the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal a 911 call shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday. Dec. 25 reported a disturbance, and a deputy was dispatched to a home on County Road 51.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol will lead the investigation of the incident.

Edwards declined to discuss the circumstances that led to the shooting while the investigation is ongoing. He said only the deputy, the suspect and two females were in the house at the time of the shooting.

Inmate escapes for 3rd time since 2003

A Hinds County inmate briefly escaped jail before being apprehended in Jackson a few hours later. His latest escape, on Dec. 26, marked his third jailbreak in the last nine years.

The Clarion-Ledger reported that 35-year-old Nathaniel Tavoris Brent escaped from the Hinds County Detention Center in Jackson, and authorities noticed he was missing shortly before 2 a.m. that Thursday.

He was apprehended about 11 a.m.

Brent previously had escaped from the Raymond facility on April 27, 2003, leaving through an unlocked fire emergency exit door. Brent was captured 10 days later in Milwaukee.

Earlier this year, Brent made his second successful escape on April 10. He was caught the next night.

Woman charged with embezzlement

A 21-year-old Columbus woman has been charged with stealing from the business where she worked.

WCBI reported that Courtney O’Callaghan is charged with embezzlement after more than $500 was discovered missing from PetSmart where she worked in Columbus.

She is free on $2,500 bond pending a Jan. 17 court hearing.
