One victim shot to death on the street

Jackson police are investigating two early morning homicides.

WLBT reports that the first happened around 12:30 a.m. Saturday. Police said the 38-year-old victim was shot four times in the parking lot of an apartment complex.

Another shooting happened just after 2 a.m. Saturday. A 23-year-old man was gunned down at a Jackson intersection. He was shot five times and was pronounced dead on the scene. No arrests have been reported so far as the investigations continue.

1 dead in Jackson home fire

One person was killed in an early morning fire at a residence in Jackson.

Jackson Fire Department officials say the fire was reported around 2 a.m. Saturday.

One man in the house died. Two people escaped without injury.

Investigators worked Saturday to identify the victim and determine the exact cause of death. The cause of the fire also was under investigation.

Meridian man struck, killed on US 78

Authorities say a 70-year-old Meridian man walking on U.S. Highway 78 west of Fulton was hit and killed by a car.

Itawamba County Sheriff Chris Dickinson tells The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal the man apparently stepped into traffic around 6:45 p.m. Thursday.

Mississippi Highway Patrolman Ray Hall said John King Yarbrough was killed in the accident.

Hall said Yarbrough apparently left his car on the side of the road and was attempting to cross Highway 78 and walked into oncoming traffic

Pearl Police: $260,000 in meth seized

Police in Pearl say methamphetamine confiscated after an Interstate 20 traffic stop had a street value of about $260,000.

Pearl police Lt. Butch Townsend said officers arrested 51-year-old Mary Belinda Martinez, of Pasadena, Texas, after the stop. Martinez was scheduled to make an initial court appearance Thursday after the Monday arrest on charge of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. She was being held in the Rankin County jail.

2 Forrest Co. inmates back in custody

Two Forrest County inmates who walked away from a work detail are in custody.

Sheriff Billy McGee tells The Hattiesburg American William Russell Oswalt and Jerred Paul King, both of Petal, were last seen Monday picking up trash on U.S. Highway 49.

McGee says both men were found last Tuesday at the home of a girlfriend of one of the suspects. They will both be charged with misdemeanor escape.

King had been in jail since Dec. 10, while Oswalt was booked on Nov. 26. Both are facing drug court violations.

McGee said although the suspects attempted to flee when approached by deputies, both were apprehended without incident.

Jessica Al-Kashgari and Allison Lena Dapozzol were both charged with aiding and abetting an escapee.
