Vicksburg coach recovering after brawl injuries

VICKSBURG – (AP) Vicksburg High School's football coach was released from the hospital after being injured Friday, Oct. 19, trying to end a brawl.

Tavares Johnson Sr. was hurt in a fight between his team and Jackson's Murrah High School. He was released Saturday, Oct. 20.

His son told The Vicksburg Post that Johnson was “all right.''

The Mississippi High School Activities Association is investigating the incident. Officials ended the game early with Murrah leading 57-42.

Players and assistant coaches from both teams left the bench to fight, which is against state rules. Mandatory penalties include a $500 fine and loss of playoff eligibility for individuals.

The association could also fine teams, bar them from the playoffs, bar them from all games or suspend individual players. Vicksburg is out of playoff contention, but Murrah still seeks a berth.
