First woman mayor of Oxford dies

OXFORD – (AP) Patricia Chadwick “Pat” Lamar, the first woman mayor of Oxford, Miss., died Monday at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi. She was 71.

The cause of death was not released.

Officials at Peebles Funeral Home in Somerville, Tenn., say services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the Oxford University United Methodist Church.

Lamar served as mayor from 1997 to 2001. She served 12 years as alderman. She won on her second try for mayor after 24-year incumbent John Leslie retired.

During her tenure, parts of Jackson Avenue were widened and the old country club was converted to a park; both it and the National Guard Readiness Center were named in her honor.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. Wayne T. Lamar; a daughter; two sons; two sisters; a brother; and seven grandchildren.
