City may take debt-collection effort to Facebook

FARMINGTON – (AP) City leaders may take debt collection efforts to the Facebook social media site.

The Daily Corinthian reports the Board of Aldermen last week discussed posting the names of people who owe money to the city.

Municipal Clerk Debora Jackson got the go-ahead from the board to set up a system and show aldermen how it would work before going live.

Though this would constitute a form of public shaming for debt-deadbeats, Face book’s “comments” element probably would be disabled.

Farmington officials said other Mississippi counties have taken similar action with positive results.

The debt information is a matter of public record, Jackson said

Even if the targeted person does not see it posted on the web, someone the individual knows probably will, she said.
