Moss Point man arrested for sex with 14-year-old

PASCAGOULA – An 18-year-old Moss Point man arrested for having sex with a 14-year-old may stay behind bars for awhile after a judge revoked his bond on a prior felony conviction. James Michael Hammons remains in jail in Jackson County after being charged with sexual battery on June 2.

Captain Mick Sears, of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, said they were notified of the incident after the mother of the 14-year-old told authorities Hammons was having sex with her daughter.

Sears said Hammons and the girl knew each other prior to the alleged sexual contact.

Hammons was transported to the Jackson County Adult Detention Center and his bond was set at $20,000. That bond was later revoked because Hammons violated the conditions of a prior felony conviction.

Jackson County officials said Hammons was told if he received another felony charge that his prior bond amount would be revoked.

Besides the sexual battery charge last month, Hammons also has two other charges for motor vehicle theft and credit card fraud in a separate incident, court officials said.

Hammons bond for the sexual battery had been set at $20,000 and a no-contact order with the victim or the victim’s family had been issued. An additional $40,000 – $20,000 per charge – has been added to that amount.

Court officials said Hammons will need an attorney to get that former bond amount reinstated.
