Woman going to prison for scamming couple

JACKSON – A Texas woman is going to prison for scamming a Chickasaw couple out of more than $13,000.

Monica Clune, 44 of Farmer’s Branch, Texas, appeared before Circuit Court Judge Andrew K. Howorth at the Lafayette County Courthouse in Oxford and pleaded guilty to five counts of wire fraud.

Howorth sentenced Clune to five years on each count, to run consecutively, with 20 years suspended and five years to serve day for day as a habitual offender. Clune has two prior felony convictions for credit card abuse in Texas. She must also go to a restitution center after her release and serve five years of post-release supervision.

“We talked with the victims in this case and they are pleased with the sentencing,” said Attorney General Jim Hood. “This defendant will have a chance to make full restitution or face more time behind bars.”

Clune, along with her husband John, solicited the victims for debt counseling.

After receiving initial fees, the Clunes proceeded to collect money from the victims claiming they were obtaining settlements from creditors on behalf of the victims. After forwarding about $13,000 to the Clunes, the victims began to discover their money was in fact not being forwarded to the creditors, but instead went into the Clunes personal accounts.

John Clune previously pled to the same charges and is now on probation.
