Diesel fuel and engine oil leaked on highway

An accident involving an 18-wheeler and a car in Jones County killed three people just before noon Friday.

Jones County Coroner Nancy Barnett has identified them as 93-year-old Lester Carney, his 56-year-old son J.L. Carney, and 83-year-old Dollie Rowell. All three were from Laurel.

The accident occurred a half mile south of Moselle Ovett Road along Hwy 15 south at 10 a.m. A white sedan was struck by a semi truck which leaked about 150 gallons of diesel fuel and 25 gallons of engine oil. A cleanup crew is on the scene.

The car went off the road and into a ditch where it appears to have flipped, crushing the roof.

City moving forward with smoking ban

The Forest Board of Aldermen expects to vote on an anti-smoking ordinance during a session next week.

The proposal being drafted would bar smoking in public places. The city held a public meeting on the proposal earlier this month.

Mayor Nancy Chambers tells the Scott County Times that she has not receive any negative calls about the proposed ordinance.

The board of aldermen meets July 3. If they approve the ordinance then, it would take effect in about 30 days.

The city is using as a basis for its ordinance a proposal from the Mississippi Tobacco-Free Coalition. The organization has suggested a smoke-free ordinance to prohibit smoking in all indoor places and within 15-20 feet of entrances to indoor public places including workplaces, public buildings, offices, restaurants and bars.

Farmers Market in Pascagoula called a success

A new farmers market is drawing positive reviews by vendors and buyers.

The Mississippi Press reports that the Pascagoula Farmers Market at Victory Lot is enjoying a steady stream of customers and that vendors report good sales.

The market opened for the first time on June 16, and is scheduled for Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The market is to continue through October.

“People are just getting used to the farmers market being here,” said Debra Smith, who was with her daughter, Addie May. selling lemonade.

The market offers a variety of produce, including beans, peppers, tomatoes, watermelons, figs, jellies, okra, eggplant and asparagus beans.

Medicaid gets $3.3 million award; Lexington gets $76k

Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) said The United States Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a grant in the amount of $3,364,123 to the Mississippi Division of Medicaid.

Thompson also announced that The United States Department of Transportation has awarded a $76,500 grant through the Federal Aviation Administration to the City of Lexington to acquire miscellaneous land.

This grant will provide federal funding for the C. A. Moore Airport in Mississippi. The land acquisition is necessary to repair erosion and relocate sections of perimeter fence to deter wildlife from entering the airfield.

C. A. Moore Airport is a general aviation airport associated with Lexington.
